Why is gas being invoiced in kWh?
Due to the connection to the European integrated grid, it is possible to receive natural gas from various European sources if necessary. This brings additional security to the natural gas supply. The energy content of one cubic meter of natural gas is not constant since different extraction sites deliver natural gas of varying quality. The purpose of the thermal settlement is to invoice gas consumptions that might have a different energy content per cubic meter without price changes. The energy content of one cubic meter of natural gas is also called calorific value ('Brennwert'). It is continuously measured at each entry point of the supply network. An average value for your invoicing period is being generated with these readings. How this value is being used in your invoice will be explained below.
What does this mean for your billing?
Gas consumption is still determined based on the readings of your gas meter in cubic meters. One m3 of natural gas contains an average of 11-12 kWh of energy. In the annual consumption account, your gas consumption is multiplied by a conversion factor, thus yielding the energy consumption in kWh. The conversion factor is obtained by the multiplication of the billing value with the valid state number (Z) for your territory. The state number is the value by which the billing value changes in a standard cubic meter under the influence of the air pressure, the effective pressure of the gas, the gas temperature, etc. (state of the gas during consumption).
Here you can see a consumption comparison between the current and previous invoice.
This is the price in Eurocent, which is due per kWh used.
The natural gas tax that is due, according to the MinöStG, is listed here.
The metering price includes the metering, reading and billing of the meters and is being calculated on a per day basis.
The basic price in Euro is independent of consumption and is being calculated on a per day basis. The nominal heat input up to 5 kW is already included in this price.
This basic price in Euro includes the nominal heat input (in kW) of your heating system. The nominal heat input is multiplied by the respective annual basic price from the sixth kW on.
This is the invoice amount for the respective supply type. Already paid instalments are yet to be subtracted from this.
This graph gives information about your consumption of the respective type of energy in comparison to other private households in Germany.
